Antique BAYRE signed Bronze Bear “Ours Assis no. 2 “(seated Bear No. 2 )

Description

Delightful bronze sculpture of a bear lying on its back and holding its right rear paw with its front right paw. It has a lovely dark brown patina and is mounted on a marble base. The Bear figure is 3 1/2” high x 5” wide x 3” deep. The marble base adds almost 1 inch in height and is 6 1/2” in length bringing the total size to 4 1/2” X 6 1/2”. It is a very heavy piece weighing in at 4 pounds 8 ounces. The impressed BAYRE signature is located at the feet of the bear on the bronze base. He is in excellent condition and perfect for any Bear lover.
Despite its size, it has great presence, as is typical of all Bayre's masterworks. The sculpture is in excellent condition. Bayre made numerous sculptures of bears which he spent a lifetime studying, along with all the other animals, at the Paris zoo. He became, arguably, the greatest sculptor of animals of all time. His works are remarkable blends of closely observed realism and an energetic sense of abstraction, and thus they helped pave the way toward 20th century modern sculpture. During his lifetime Bayre sold the rights to his sculptures to a foundry, and since then there have been many editions of his works by various foundries.
