Description

Here's a scarce piece of MUNCIE POTTERY that's difficult to appreciate from merely looking at the pictures in the catalog pages or the couple of photos in the MUNCIE book. I had never seen this shape in person before owning this one and I was very surprised at the intricacy of the potter's work. Book views of the shape are like my 2nd and 3rd photos.. straight on with no hint of what was created above.  This shape shows amazing skills in hand forming this rim ..pulled away and downward at 180 degree positions and between, the clay folded inward and down so far it is nearly folded upon itself. Amazing skill in bringing the rim so close to the inner wall without touching or creating stresses that could crack the pottery in firing.  The piece is inscribed on the base with 2A the moulder/finisher mark. In addition it has what looks like a grease pencil mark.. 432-5" which may or may not have been added at the factory. From the catalog, it certainly is the correct shape, but I question the size. This piece stands nearly 6" tall and about 8" across the widest part of the rim. The catalog shows the piece as having been made in different sizes. Remarkably the piece is in mint condition and has no factory flaws either. The piece has not been cleaned in any way.  Wonderful shape.
