Northwave Sails was founded in 1982 by Blake Richards - a hanglider pilot and aeronautic enthusiast. Richards was one of the Gorge’s windsurfing pioneers who built Northwave’s reputation for durability and ingenious design. When other sail makers outsourced production to Asia, Northwave decided to keep the process in the USA. In 2015, Tim Ferrick took the reigns and is now leading Northwave into the next era. Ferrick learned how to windsurf on Lake Erie in the 1970s and has been in the Gorge since 1993, with over 15 winter seasons riding the swell in Los Barriles, B.C.S. Northwave is dedicated to making the best windsurfing sails in the world, right here in Hood River, OR. Made in the USA, our sails are built to order with customers’ personal color requests. Always on the cusp of innovation and performance design, Northwave contracts for a variety of high-tech industrial sewing products and is now looking toward the future of wind sports - wing-foiling…
The Northwave Sails: A few unique attributes help to make Northwave Sails the best in the world:
1.Robichaud Batten Systems – our battens are made right here next door to the sail loft in Hood River, OR. RBS specializes in providing E-Glass and Carbon Fiber epoxy battens to the best sailmakers in the world.
2. Mast sleeve – Northwave uses a unique mast sleeve material that provides just enough flex to smooth out any imperfections in the sail. A smooth, stable, non-turbulent wing is the result.
3. The piéce de résistance – our signature AUTO-BATTEN system. The battens in our sails are all attached to piece of spectra-cord along the luff. When downhauled, the battens tighten equally from the luff toward the leach, contrary to other sails. This design ensures equal tension on all battens AND, eliminates any extra buckles, screws, straps, etc. on the leach. This makes a lighter and cleaner leach that swings around more easily and provides superior aerodynamics
